NGC 2264<\/b>\u00a0is the designation number of the\u00a0New General Catalogue<\/a>\u00a0that identifies two\u00a0astronomical objects<\/a>\u00a0as a single object: the\u00a0Cone Nebula<\/a>, and the Christmas Tree Cluster. Two other objects are within this designation but not officially included, the\u00a0Snowflake Cluster<\/a>,[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the\u00a0Fox Fur Nebula<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

All of the objects are located in the\u00a0Monoceros constellation<\/a>\u00a0and are located about 720\u00a0parsecs<\/a>\u00a0or 2,300\u00a0light-years<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Earth<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Due to its relative proximity and large size, it is extremely well studied.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

NGC 2264 is sometimes referred to as the Christmas Tree Cluster and the\u00a0Cone Nebula<\/a>. However, the designation of NGC 2264 in the\u00a0New General Catalogue<\/a>\u00a0refers to both objects and not the cluster alone.[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
