Several small open clusters are embedded in the nebula: CR 34, 632, and 634<sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template Template-Fact\">[<i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Citation needed\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\"><span title=\"This claim needs references to reliable sources. (February 2009)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup> (in the head) and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"IC1848\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IC1848\">IC\u00a01848<\/a> (in the body). The object is more commonly called by the cluster designation IC\u00a01848.<\/p>\n<p>Small emission nebula IC\u00a01871 is present just left of the top of the head, and small emission nebulae 670 and 669 are just below the lower back area.<\/p>\n<p>The galaxies <a title=\"Maffei 1\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maffei_1\">Maffei 1<\/a> and <a title=\"Maffei 2\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maffei_2\">Maffei 2<\/a> are both nearby the nebula, although light extinction from the Milky Way makes them very hard to see.
