Sh2-155<\/b>\u00a0(also designated\u00a0Caldwell<\/a>\u00a09,\u00a0Sharpless 155<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0S155<\/b>) is a\u00a0diffuse nebula<\/a>\u00a0in the constellation\u00a0Cepheus<\/a>, within a larger nebula complex containing emission, reflection, and dark nebulosity. It is widely known as the\u00a0Cave Nebula<\/b>, though that name was applied earlier to Ced 201, a different nebula in Cepheus. Sh2-155 is an ionized\u00a0H II region<\/a>\u00a0with ongoing\u00a0star formation<\/a>\u00a0activity,[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0at an estimated distance of 725 parsecs (2400 light-years) from Earth.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Sh2-155[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0was first noted as a galactic emission nebula in 1959 in the extended second edition of the\u00a0Sharpless catalogue<\/a>,[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0being a part of the much larger Cep OB3\u00a0Association<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Although Sh2-155 is relatively faint for amateur observation, some of its structure may be seen visually through a moderately sized telescope under dark skies.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Sh2-155 lies at the edge of the Cepheus B cloud (part of the Cepheus\u00a0molecular cloud<\/a>), and is\u00a0ionized<\/a>\u00a0by young stars from the Cep OB3 association.[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It has been suggested that radiation from the hot\u00a0O-type star<\/a>\u00a0HD 217086 is compressing the region, triggering the formation of a new generation of stars.[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0A study of the region’s\u00a0young stellar objects<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0Chandra X-ray Observatory<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Spitzer Space Telescope<\/a>\u00a0shows a progression of stellar ages in front of the cloud, supporting the hypothesis of triggered star-formation.[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
