Discovered by <a title=\"Karl Ludwig Harding\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karl_Ludwig_Harding\">Karl Ludwig Harding<\/a>, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the <a title=\"Earth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth\">Earth<\/a> of all the bright <a title=\"Planetary nebula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Planetary_nebula\">planetary nebulae<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Horaetal2006_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helix_Nebula#cite_note-Horaetal2006-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> The estimated distance is about 215 parsecs (700 <a title=\"Light-year\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year\">light-years<\/a>). It is similar in appearance to the <a title=\"Cat's Eye Nebula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cat%27s_Eye_Nebula\">Cat&#8217;s Eye Nebula<\/a> and the <a title=\"Ring Nebula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ring_Nebula\">Ring Nebula<\/a>, whose size, age, and physical characteristics are similar to the <a title=\"Dumbbell Nebula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dumbbell_Nebula\">Dumbbell Nebula<\/a>, varying only in its relative proximity and the appearance from the equatorial viewing angle.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ODelletal2002_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helix_Nebula#cite_note-ODelletal2002-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the &#8220;Eye of God&#8221;
