The Helix Nebula<\/b>, also known as The Helix<\/b>, NGC 7293<\/b>, is a large planetary nebula<\/a> (PN) located in the constellation<\/a> Aquarius<\/a>. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding<\/a>, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the Earth<\/a> of all the bright planetary nebulae<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> The estimated distance is about 215 parsecs (700 light-years<\/a>). It is similar in appearance to the Cat’s Eye Nebula<\/a> and the Ring Nebula<\/a>, whose size, age, and physical characteristics are similar to the Dumbbell Nebula<\/a>, varying only in its relative proximity and the appearance from the equatorial viewing angle.[6]<\/a><\/sup> The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the “Eye of God” in pop culture,[7]<\/a><\/sup> as well as the “Eye of Sauron<\/a>“.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
